The principle architect of Navy’s most significant cultural change to date, Vice Admiral Russ Crane, AO , CSM today handed over the reigns of command to Vice Admiral Ray Griggs, AM , CSC at a ceremony at Russell Offices in Canberra.

“It is my honour to hand over the Navy to Vice Admiral Griggs,” said Vice Admiral Crane.

“He brings not only extensive operational experience to the role, but a commitment to cultural reform under New Generation Navy, a commitment to efficiency under the Strategic Reform Program, and most of all, a commitment to lead all of you, our Navy people.”

The parade was reflective of the outgoing Chief’s command as it was dignified, respectful and succinct. These were the values of the outgoing Chief of Navy, who was relentless in his desire to challenge and encourage all Officers and Sailors to improve Navy. He motivated Navy people of all ranks to lead and inspire their subordinates.

His time in command will be remembered as a period when significant challenges were met and addressed head on.

Vice Admiral Crane’s legacy includes preparation for the introduction of the new amphibious capability into service, and the reform of Navy’s culture through New Generation Navy, which defined Navy’s ten ‘signature behaviours’ focusing on people, performance and professionalism as a guide to Navy’s desired culture.

Vice Admiral Crane’s successful tenure in command was acknowledged by the Prime Minister, the Minister for Defence and senior ADF colleagues for introducing wide ranging reforms to best position Navy for its future commitments.

Vice Admiral Crane’s successor, Vice Admiral Griggs, brings extensive operational and command experience to the position as Chief of Navy with his most recent posting being that of Deputy Chief of Joint operations. [mappress] Source: navy , June 8, 2011;
