Russia: Navy Conducts Damage Control Drill in Baltiysk

Damage control drill was conducted on small-size missile ship Liven in Baltiysk Naval Base. The exercise scenario implied extinguishing of fire in bow machine compartment, shutting a hole and pumping out water from the hold as a result of “collision” with another vessel.

Upon alarm signal given by the ship’s CO Capt 3 rank Kirill Kamenskih, the crew took their battle stations. Personnel of damage control party headed by the ship’s boatswain WO Sergei Davidovsky displayed professionalism and firmness while fire extinguishing and shutting the “hole“.

Officer of Baltiysk Naval Base HQ Capt 3 rank Yury Kozel who observed the crew’s activities was satisfied with results of the damage control drill.

Young sailors from damage control party Seaman Evgeny Volgutov and Anton Leniushkin distinguished themselves the most. Despite relatively short service record – 3 months – the sailors acted skillfully and have accomplished all assigned missions.

Presently, young sailors make about 40 per cent of Liven‘s crew. According to Capt 3 rank Kirill Kamenskih, they have passed all drills normally and now are allowed to perform their duties without exterior help.

For the crew, the exercise was a sort of examination, and mariners practically proved their readiness to act masterfully in case of emergency. Soon the crew will continue to improve their skills.
