Navy Intercepts Another Multi-Day Trawler Illegally Headed for Australia

Sri Lanka Navy intercepted another multi-day trawler illegally headed for Australia off Nilaweli on 21st July 2012. The intercepted trawler was escorted to the Trincomalee Harbour with 53 persons onboard for handing over to the Criminal Investigation Department for further investigations. Arrested persons are in Trincomalee, Negombo, Killinochchi and Jaffna.

The trawler, named “Minoru Putha 2” with personal belongings and dry rations stacked inside, was detected by a Fast Naval Patrol Craft attached to the Eastern Naval Command. The arrest is the seventh made by the Navy within 12 days in Sri Lankan waters.

Navy’s vigilance has been able to avert 7 human tragedies in the prevailing rough seas and save the lives of 454 persons during the month of July.
