The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim invited more than 30 Sailors from the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Wayne E. Meyer (DDG 108) to attend a game against the Cleveland Indians at Angel Stadium of Anaheim Aug. 15.
The invite stemmed from the Navy Days 2012 event series, where Wayne E. Meyer is set up to host the public August 18-19.
Navy Days L.A. is designed to educate the public through tours, distinguished visitor embarks and media coverage of the festivities.
“We are thrilled,” said Trina Berberet , entertainment coordinator for the Angels. “We are really proud and honored to have them here.”
Fostering a relationship with the military is something the Angels are more than happy to continue, Berberet added.
“It was an excellent chance for our Sailors to enjoy the hospitality of the city as well as allow our outstanding Sailors to interact with the supportive community,” said Lt. j.g. Brendan P. Dziama , Meyer’s gunnery officer.
Sailors were invited to walk onto the field before the game.
“I’ve been a fan for 12 years, ” said Logistics Specialist 3rd Class Olivia White . “It was really neat stepping out on the field. It was a good experience seeing the players warm up.”
While on the field, Sailors watched the Angels run drills and complete a routine warm-up.
“It was an amazing feeling, ” said Damage Controlman 3rd Class Adam Rhea . “It is something I will never get again, and I am excited to have experienced it with the Angels.”
Second baseman Howie Kendrick took some time away from practice to sign some memorabilia for Sailors.
“He (Kendrick) was there for us, since we were fans of the team,” added Rhea.
The Navy Days celebration honors the men and women of the military through public events and recognition, and also provides the sea services an opportunity to showcase the capabilities of surface platforms, equipment and the skills of the men and women serving aboard these vessels.
