Grey skies were no deterrent for Sydney families on Saturday when Garden Island opened its gates for the Sydney Area Navy Open Day. Showcased on the day was the newest addition to the Naval Fleet, the Australian Defence Vessel Ocean Shield. HMA Ships Ballarat (II) and Gascoyne (II) also opened their gangways, showcasing Naval capability to the public.

Once off the ships, visitors browsed 100 years of RAN memorabilia at the Heritage Centre, while on the wharf the Clearance Diver’s tank got a work out, entertaining children and families with games of noughts and crosses. Throughout the day the Navy band entertained guests as they wandered the displays, experiencing a little piece of the Navy life.

Earlier in the day, HMAS Ballarat (II) hosted the media launch of the annual Variety Santa Fun Run. 120 people dressed as Santa danced a ‘gangnam’ style routine to promote fun run which raises money for the children’s charity. The fun run will take place on Sunday, November 25 at Darling Harbour.
