Sri Lankan Secretary of Defence Visits Mullikulum

Secretary of Defence and Urban Development, Mr. Gotabhaya Rajapaksha visited Mullikulum on 26th December 2012 in order to look into the post-war development in the area.

He chaired a meeting attended by Government officials and residents where infrastructure, resettlement and livelihood uplift were focused. Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy, Vice Admiral Jayanath Colombage, Director General Operations, Rear Admiral Jayantha Perera and Commander North-western Naval Area, Rear Admiral Rohana Perera were also in attendance along with Archbishop of Colombo, His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith and Bishop of Mannar, His Lordship Rayappu Joseph.

During the visit the Secretary of Defence also reviewed the progress of the houses being constructed by the Navy for the resettled families at Mullikulum.

Under the first phase of the housing project, the Navy is building 60 houses. It also provides assistance to the resettled families to start their livelihoods in fisheries and agricultural sectors with a view to uplift their living conditions. During droughts, water is also provided to the residents by the Navy as part of its community welfare programmes.
