Australian Navy’s Electronics Challenge will commence mid-July as part of the inaugural Engineering Challenge providing technical sailors the chance to demonstrate professional skills through healthy competition.
Lieutenant Commander Damon Craig and Petty Officer Jeremy Younger of Chief Information Officer Group and Defence Material Organisation in Laverton Victoria, recently unveiled the robot kits that will be used to assess the skills and team work of Navy’s best electronics sailors. The kits have been codenamed MONTee and AIMee.
Teams of four Electronic Technician (ET) sailors will assemble elements of an optical fire control system from the kit provided and conduct system alignments as well as tracking and firing runs. Design and build quality will be judged against moving video targets.
“It’s an exciting project that shows the basic building blocks of a war fighting combat system,” LCDR Craig said.
“We’ve really enjoyed the development of the prototypes and hope it inspires and grows the skills of ET’s for tomorrow’s Navy.”
In recognition of their skills, national champions will qualify to wear a cuff-rate on ceremonial uniforms indentifying them as champion technicians.
National championships will be held in Sydney during December 2013.
