Guided-missile destroyer USS Momsen (DDG 92) arrived in Saipan, July 3.
The visit will provide the crew with an operational break before continuing their current patrol in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of responsibility.
“Saipan has a lot to offer the Sailors for fun and safe liberty,” said Cmdr. Elaine Collins, commanding officer of Momsen. “There is a lot of history between Saipan and Tinian for the Sailors to experience during the port visit.
The ship’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) committee provides Sailors a chance to sight see, shop and explore a new place that many have not seen before.
“Saipan sounds like an amazing place and I’m looking forward to enjoying my liberty by going diving as a part of an MWR tour,” said Gunner’s Mate 3rd Class Brian Kopp.
During the port visit the Momsen Sailors will be participating in Saipan’s Liberation Day Parade.
“One of my favorite parts of a port visit is being able to interact with the locals,” said Gunner’s Mate 2nd Class Charles Espe. “Being a member of the color guard I am excited to have the opportunity to participate in a local parade to help celebrate Saipan’s Liberation Day.”
This port call will also provide an opportunity to strengthen the relationship between Saipan and the U.S. to help maintain a safe maritime environment.
“We will be hosting a Key Engagement Leadership dinner and tour on board with 11 prominent figures from the community,” said Collins. “We are excited to have the opportunity to showcase the pride and professionalism of every aspect on board the Momsen.”
Momsen is on patrol with the George Washington Strike Group in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations security and stability in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
