Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus concluded his first visit to Mexico Dec. 17, where he reinforced the existing partnership with Mexico.
Mabus met with government and military officials to discuss U.S – Mexican military cooperation and defense and security issues in the region.
“We are committed to our enduring partnership with Mexico,” said Mabus. “Our navies and marine corps have a history of working together – whether in exercises or exchange programs. These engagements are vital to developing ties between our militaries but also personal ties that will allow us to build on a strong foundation of trust and friendship.”
While in Mexico City, Mabus met with Mexico’s Secretary of the Navy Adm. Vidal Soberon Sanz and his staff. Mabus also traveled to Naval Air Station Campeche where he met with Coordinator General of the Mexican Marine Corps, Vice Adm. Marco Antonio Ortega Siu.
“With continued engagement comes greater understanding of how we can better work together to improve regional security,” said Mabus. “We are proud to be working alongside our neighbor to meet evolving challenges.”
Mabus also met with Sailors and Marines stationed at the U.S. embassy to thank them for their service.
Mabus’ visit represents a continuation of the Department of the Navy’s focus on building partnerships designed to help distribute the burden of securing the global maritime domain based on alliances, shared values and mutual trust.
