BAE Systems Norfolk Ship Repair has received a 13.89 million contract for the planned maintenance work on USS Wasp (LHD 1).

The dry-docking planned maintenance availability will update and improve USS Wasp’s military and technical capabilities.

Under the contract, BAE Systems will plan and execute depot-level maintenance, alterations and modifications on the warship.

USS Wasp is a multipurpose amphibious assault ship of the US Navy. She is 257 meters long with a beam of 32 meters.

On August 12, 2013, USS Wasp held testing of F-35B Lightning II Aircraft aboard, amid which Wasp sailors with Integrated Test Force and other tem members tested and validated the F-35B. These tests were a major milestone, marking the first successful night launch and recovery of the aircraft at sea.

The maintenance availability work will be performed in Norfolk, VA., with expected completion by November 2014.
