Royal Canadian navy ships HMCS Glace Bay and HMCS Kingston returned to the port of Halifax, Nova Scotia yesterday.
The ships, which are both Kingston-class vessels, successfully completed their six-week deployment on Operation CARIBBE.
During the operation they conducted joint operations and supported multiple patrol aircraft sorties resulting in the disruption of about three metric tonnes of cocaine.
“The crews of HMCS Glace Bay and Kingston did an outstanding job on Operation CARIBBE. Not only did they deliver excellence in joint operations with our international partners, they also helped strengthen our ties with regional navies through their professionalism and tactical skill”, Vice Admiral Mark Norman, Commander of the Royal Canadian Navy said.
One of the ships, HMCS Kingston, suffered an electrical fire while on its way to Halifax on Saturday, April 12th. The fire was quickly detected and extinguished by the crew. There were no injuries, the Navy informed.
The Royal Canadian Armed Forces have been conducting Operation CARIBBE, aimed at improving regional security and deterring criminal activities in the coastal regions of Central America, since November 2006.
