Future amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6) conducted a port visit to Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba while transiting to its home port of San Diego, California July 21.
During the port visit, NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center (FLC) Jacksonville Detachment Guantanamo Bay provided 900,000 gallons of JP5 and diesel fuel as well as 45 pallets of provisions, supplies, and mail. Additionally 30 pallets of Operation Hand Clasp materials, a program that transports educational, humanitarian, and good will materials on U.S. Navy ships were loaded.
America is currently transiting the U.S. Southern Command’s area of responsibility (AOR) as part of “America Visits the Americas” expedition and will engage in cooperative maritime security operations with partner nations in order to enhance interoperability, maintain access to the region, and build enduring partnerships that foster regional security.
The ship is slated to visit several Latin American nations allowing the ship’s crew to serve as goodwill ambassadors and experience local culture.
