The public in Wales are invited to a ‘Meet the Forces’ event in Cardiff Bay following the NATO Summit.
The event on Sunday (7 September) will give people the chance to hear about what the Armed Forces do, and see some of the equipment used in its duties.
There will be the chance to explore ships including the Type-45 Destroyer, one of the UK Navy’s most advanced ships, climb army walls, examine tanks and RAF replica planes and enjoy military bands.
The ‘Meet the Forces’ Day will run from 11am until 6pm.
Visitors will be able to:
– Visit the 6 Naval ships (from UK, France, Latvia, Lithuania, The Netherlands and Norway) which are docked in Cardiff this week – Study the Army’s military kit – tanks and other vehicles – and try out their climbing walls and inflatable assault course; – Enjoy the RAF’s replica aeroplanes; – Listen to military bands playing at locations throughout Cardiff Bay; – The Welsh Government, Cardiff Council and the Wales Office are supporting the day’s events.
Secretary of State for Wales Stephen Crabb said:
“This NATO Summit and the very serious threats it has considered has brought home the huge debt of gratitude we owe to our Armed Forces.
“‘Meet the Forces’ day is an opportunity for we, as the public, to come along, show our support and learn more about what it means to be on the front-lines.
“I feel very privileged to attend the event and I’m looking forward to paying personal tribute to some of those men and women who put themselves at risk day-in day-out to keep us safe.”
First Minister Carwyn Jones AM similarly welcomed the event, saying:
“As a government, we are proud to support Sunday’s event to honour the hard work and sacrifice of our Armed Forces. Coming immediately after the NATO Summit, it’s a chance for the public to learn more about their work and the day-to-day operations of those who serve our country.
“I will be attending the event to lend my personal support and emphasise our commitment to supporting everyone from Wales involved with the Armed Forces, past and present.”
Cardiff City Council Leader Phil Bale added:
“This is an excellent opportunity to showcase Cardiff and, following the strict security requirements needed for the Summit, it is important that Cardiff residents and visitors have the opportunity to meet members of the Armed Forces and have a look around the vessels and the equipment they use to carry out their job. This is a unique opportunity and I hope the day will be enjoyed by all.”
