The newly commissioned amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6) passes the Coronado bridge as it arrives at homeport at Naval Base San Diego.

The ship replaces the Tarawa class of amphibious assault ships and is optimized for aviation and capable of supporting current and future aircraft such as the MV-22 Osprey and F-35B Joint Strike Fighter.

USS America (LHA 6) is the US Navy’s newest and most technologically advanced amphibious assault ship, which was commissioned during a formal ceremony at Pier 30/32 on October 11.
