Pacific special operations and 7th Fleet maritime special operations forces (SOF) conducted advanced maritime interdiction operations and visit, board, search and seizure training during exercise Multi-Sail 2015 while embarked aboard Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Michael Murphy (DDG 112) off the coast of Guam in March.
Special operations forces employed from surface ships highlight the dynamic and far reaching capabilities of 7th Fleet and SOF assets and operations. Combined underway training and exercises increase maritime SOF’s ability to expand communications, stage equipment and interact with conventional naval forces for better positioning and readiness in support of mission tasking and contingency operations within the Pacific Fleet area of operations.
Michael Murphy, homeported in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, is currently on a deployment to the 7th Fleet area of operation and part of Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 15, who is forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan.
Multi-Sail is an annual DESRON 15-led exercise that is designed to assess combat systems, improve teamwork and increase warfighting capabilities in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operation.
