After the latest Mediterranean Sea migrant tragedy, the European Council made a decision on April 23 to bolster efforts in preventing further loss of lives at sea.
Many EU member states immediately pledged to provide assistance by sending additional vessels and aircraft to avoid future tragedies. According to the Council, the funding for the Mediterranean operations will now be tripled.
As one of the first countries to join these efforts, France sent its corvette Commandant Birot F796 to assist Frontex’s Operation Triton. Commandant Birot joined the operation on April 27 and was assigned to patrol the area south of Sicily.
