US Navy’s Military Sealift Command hospital ship USNS Comfort (T-AH 20) is on its ninth Continuing Promise 2015 (CP-15) mission stop in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
An opening ceremony held on August 14 at the 27 de Febrero Naval Base marked the start of this mission stop during Comfort’s six-month deployment and the third time that the Continuing Promise mission has visited the Dominican Republic.
CP-15 mission operations began over the weekend, where NGO volunteers and military medical professionals from the Dominican Republic Ministry of Health worked alongside Comfort medical professionals to provide no-cost medical and dental services. Just days into the Dominican Republic mission stop, medical providers have cared for over 3,000 patients at two locations, Parque del Este and Hermandad de los Pensionados.
Since deploying in April, Comfort has completed mission stops in Belize, Guatemala, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Panama, El Salvador, Colombia and Dominica. Additional stops are planned for Haiti, and Honduras. To date, more than 86,400 patients have been seen and more than 940 surgeries have been performed aboard Comfort.
