US Mid-Atlantic Regional Maintenance Center’s (MARMC) Production Department completed repairs to Landing Craft Utility (LCU) 1653, dry docked in Dynamic (AFDL 6) at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, Sept. 1.
LCU-1653, attached to Assault Craft Unit (ACU) 2, suffered damage to the aft starboard side of her hull during training exercises this summer.
Hull Maintenance Technician 2nd Class Curtis Klein, who works with MARMC Hull Division’s Shipfitter Shop, said:
We isolated and cut out the section of the boat that was damaged and worked through replacing that area with new steel.
With MARMC’s capabilities and a diverse range of production and repair shops, they perform maintenance and repairs from hydraulic pumps to electrical work and are continually looking to expand their capabilities.
Repairs to LCU-1653 were completed in roughly one month while she was dry docked in Dynamic.
MARMC’s Production Department will be partnering with Dynamic again starting in December, for approximately three months, performing structural work inside Dynamic’s tanks and installing new pumps.
LCU-1653 will be heading back to ACU-2 to work on her certifications and will start preparing for deployment in the near future.
