The wreckage found over the weekend at the bottom of the ocean has now been confirmed as the missing cargo ship El Faro.

Located by the US Navy’s USNS Apache on October 31, the remains were confirmed after a search team aboard the vessel conducted numerous surveys, as reported by NTSB.

Survey of area and the vessel continues at a depth of about 15,000 feet where the hull was located. The team on Apache will use CURV 21, a deep ocean remotely operated vehicle outfitted with a video camera, to start the documentation of the vessel and the debris field and attempt to locate and recover the voyage data recorder.

The cargo ship El Faro went missing on October 1 when it was hit by Hurricane Joaquin.
