The German frigate FGS Mecklenburg-Vorpommern collided with the container ship Nordic Bremen in Kiel Canal, Germany on December 9.

The collision took place near Rendsburg in the 98-kilometer-long Kiel Canal in bad weather conditions around 4 am.

According to German Navy, no one was injured in the accident but both vessels sustained damage.

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern was damaged at the stern area while the container ship, according to Maritime News, had a breach in the starboard area and two broken containers.

The warship was returning to her homeport in Wilhelmshaven after attending a streamer award ceremony in Rostock, Germany.

The frigate will be transferred to a dry dock in Brunsbüttel for a preliminary assessment of damage. After that, the frigate will continue her trip to Wilhelmshaven.

As it is the standard procedure, a navy official responsible for accident investigations has started an internal examination. Water protection police Kiel also started an investigation of their own.
