American defense technology company Boeing has received an $81 million contract to deliver 22 Lot 89 Harpoon missiles to the government of India.
The U.S. Department of Defense said Friday that the sale of anti-ship missiles and associated containers and components was approved under the foreign military sales program.
Harpoon is an all-weather, over-the-horizon, anti-ship missile system that is currently being manufactured by Boeing Defense, Space & Security.
In 2014, India requested the Harpoon to fit it on its Shishumar class submarine. According to a U.S. Defence Security Cooperation Agency news release at the time, India earlier purchased Harpoon missiles for integration on Indian Air Force Jaguar aircraft and Indian Navy P-8I maritime patrol aircraft.
According to the Department of Defense, work on the latest contract is expected to be completed by June 2018.
