The U.S. Navy has awarded General Dynamics Electric Boat a $13 million contract for work on the U.S. and UK Trident II submarine launched ballistic missile programs.
Under the contract, which is potentially worth $46 million if all options are exercised, General Dynamics will perform alterations on U.S. and UK submarines, provide technical engineering support, attack weapon system trainer requirements, and advanced weapons system development requirements.
The company will also perform technical services for Trident engineering, refueling, and overhaul maintenance period and demonstration and shakedown operation. Work will be performed in Groton, Connecticut, with an expected completion date of April 30, 2020.
Trident II D5 is a submarine-launched ballistic missile which is one part of the nation’s strategic deterrent triad. As the most survivable leg of the triad, it provides the national command authority with assured second-strike capability. Since its introduction to the fleet in 1989, the Trident II D5 missile has completed 165 successful test flights.
