US Navy cruiser arrives in Norway

U.S. Navy’s Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Leyte Gulf (CG 55) made a stop in Haakonsvern, Norway, en route to the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations.

The cruiser arrived in Norway on April 20 after departing its homeport in Norfolk, Virginia, March 27.

“Port visits such as this are uncommon; however, to be part of a crew that is fortunate enough to experience the rich culture that Norway has to offer is an amazing opportunity,” Cmdr. Steven McCauley, executive officer of USS Leyte Gulf (CG 55), said.

“The sailors will be able to look back on these days and tell their stories, knowing that only a small number of people can say the same. That itself is worth its weight in gold in my opinion. And, as always, both on duty and on liberty, our sailors foster peace and friendship with our hosts while expressing our gratitude for their hospitality.”

Leyte Gulf deployed to conduct maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the 6th Fleet area of operation.
