The U.S. Navy’s amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6), currently operating in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations on its maiden deployment, pulled into Singapore for a visit on August 6.
Sailors and marines aboard America have been conducting unit-level training in a number of warfare areas in Indo-Asia-Pacific region over the past several weeks since the ship departed its homeport of San Diego in early July.
“The America team is honored to visit Singapore,” said Capt. Joseph Olson , America commanding officer. “Our visit is an opportunity for the ship to replenish supplies, and experience the country’s rich culture as we represent our country as ambassadors of goodwill.”
After visiting Singapore, America will continue training with allies and partners in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations.
The amphibious ready group (ARG) is composed of amphibious transport dock ship USS San Diego (LPD 22) and the amphibious dock landing ship USS Pearl Harbor (LSD 52) in addition to USS America.
USS America is deploying as the first ship of its class. It is capable of accommodating the F-35B fifth-generation fighter aircraft which recently completed its third and final developmental test phase (DT-III) aboard USS America.
Compared to previous amphibious assault ships, America’s design features several enhanced aviation capabilities which include an enlarged hangar deck, realignment and expansion of the aviation maintenance facilities, a significant increase in available stowage of parts and equipment and an increased aviation fuel capacity.
America can accommodate F-35Bs, MV-22B Osprey tiltrotor aircraft, and a complement of Navy and Marine Corps helicopters.
