The US Navy’s Los Angeles-class attack submarine USS Bremerton (SSN 698) on February 14 made a stop in Singapore as part of its deployment to the Indo-Pacific region.
For some of the 140 crew members, this is their first time in the Changi Naval Base and their first visit to Singapore, the US Navy said.
During a visit to Yokosuka, Japan, in December 2017, the submarine’s commanding officer, Cmdr. Travis Zettel, said the visit was a final one for the submarine. It is therefore safe to assume that this is likely the final Singapore visit for the Harbor-homeported submarine.
USS Bremerton has spent 35 years in service with the US Navy and is currently on her 16th Western Pacific deployment.
Bremerton was scheduled to be decommissioned by the end of 2017 but her decommissioning was postponed in 2016. Unconfirmed reports indicate the submarine could retire in 2019.
USS Bremerton, commissioned on March 28th, 1981, is named after the city of Bremerton, Washington. It is the tenth ship of the Los Angeles-class attack submarines. The vessel is 362-feet long, displaces 6,900 tons and can be armed with Mark-48 torpedoes and Tomahawk cruise missiles.
