The Guatemalan Navy, working with the US Coast Guard, intercepted the largest cocaine shipment in Guatemala’s history some 300 nautical miles off its coast.

According to a Guatemalan Armed Forces statement on May 8, the narcotics were intercepted aboard a Tanzania-flagged cargo ship.

Following the operation, the vessel was berthed at the Puerto Quetzal port where Guatemalan and US agents have so far discovered over 3 tons of cocaine. It was noted that the inspection is ongoing meaning the final figure could still rise.

Nine Peruvians, two Ecuadorians and two Colombians were arrested following the operation.
