South Korean shipbuilder HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), a division of shipbuilding giant HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE), has signed a contract to build four warships for the Peruvian Navy with local shipyard SIMA.
As informed, the company will build one 3,400-ton frigate, one 2,200-ton offshore patrol vessel, and two 1,400-ton amphibious warfare ships. The contract, worth KRW 640.6 billion ($438 million), was signed in Peru, three weeks after HD HHI was selected as the preferred bidder for the project.
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries will design the ship, supply equipment and technical support, and state-owned shipbuilder SIMA is responsible for the construction. The vessels are slated for delivery by 2030.
In particular, through this contract, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has secured the status of a ‘strategic partner’ with the Peruvian government and navy for the next 15 years.
Furthermore, the South Korean shipbuilder has been designated as the preferred bidder for future projects, including five frigates, three offshore patrol ships, and two landing craft.
HD HHI emphasized that the deal marks the largest naval ship order placed by a Latin American country with a South Korean shipbuilder.
