The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) was involved in a collision with the bulk carrier Besiktas-M, while operating in the vicinity of Port Said, Egypt, in the Mediterranean Sea, the US Navy’s Sixth Fleet reported.
As informed, the accident happened at approximately 11:46 p.m. local time, on February 12, 2025. According to the US Navy’s officials, the collision did not endanger USS Harry S. Truman, as there are no reports of flooding or injuries.
Furthermore, the navy emphasized that the propulsion plants remained unaffected and “in a safe and stable condition”.
In the following period, the incident will be further investigated. More information will be released as it becomes available, the navy added.
Besiktas-M is a 188-meter-long bulker sailing under the flag of Panama. The vessel was built by Japanese shipbuilder Oshima Shipbuilding. It is owned by the Turkish company Black Hawk Shipping and operated by Synergy Ship Management, also based in Türkiye, according to the data provided by classification society ClassNK. No details were reported about the condition of the vessel after the collision.
USS Harry S. Truman is the eighth Nimitz-class aircraft carrier of the US Navy and is named after the 33rd President of the United States, Harry S. Truman. It is homeported at Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia.
The 333-meter-long warship, one of the biggest in the world, recently visited Greece together with its embarked air wing and the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Jason Dunham (DDG 109), as part of the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group (HSTCSG).
After entering the US Central Command (CENTCOM) area of responsibility in December last year, the carrier strike group supported multiple self-defense strikes against targets across areas of Yemen.
