A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been signed between the UK’s shipbuilder BAE Systems and Norwegian firm Hamek that will see the two companies work together to support Norway’s maritime requirements.
The signing was completed at an industrial collaboration event at Hamek’s Harstad site in the north of Norway, where the company plans to invest in its dry-docking and ship facilities.
This event, which also saw the presence of British and Norwegian defense and government officials, took place alongside the Royal Navy ship RFA Lyme Bay.
The signing marks the beginning of a key partnership focused on enhancing the capabilities of Hamek’s dry-docking and ship facilities, with substantial investments planned for their expansion.
The MOU sets the foundation for further collaboration between BAE Systems and Hamek, particularly in the context of Norway’s ongoing procurement process for advanced maritime capabilities. Among the vessels under consideration is the UK’s Type 26 frigate.
If successful, this agreement could unlock enhanced support and maintenance solutions for Norwegian naval assets, while also generating significant economic benefits for the region.
Bruce Balchin , BAE Systems’ Norway Campaign Director, emphasized the longstanding maritime relationship between Norway and the UK, highlighting the importance of this partnership in strengthening industrial ties.
“Norway and the UK have shared a strong maritime bond for decades, built on mutual cooperation as close allies. This MOU allows us to build on this legacy, supporting Hamek’s development plans for facility investment that will benefit both the Norwegian fleet’s current and future needs,” he stated.
“This MOU forms the basis for future growth and development of our company. Furthermore, implementation of the agreement will give Norway as a nation increased preparedness in the north,” Jan Oddvar Olsen , Managing Director, Hamek, added.
To remind, a few months ago, BAE Systems started construction on the Royal Navy’s fifth Type 26 frigate.
