TCG Muratreis is the third in a series of six Reis-class (Type 214) submarines. The new vessels are approximately 68.5 meters long and can reach a speed of 20 knots while submerged. They weigh 1,856 tons above water and 2,042 tons underwater, and can dive to a depth of more than 300 meters.

The Turkish Navy commissioned its first Reis-class, TCG Piri Reis (S-330), during a ceremony at Aksaz Naval Base in August last year. The second unit in this class, TCG Hizir Reis, was dry-docked in 2022.

The fourth, fifth, and sixth submarines—TCG Aydınreis, TCG Seydialireis, and TCG Selmanreis—are currently under construction.

Type 214 submarines are export versions of the Type 212 submarine in service with the navies of Italy and Germany, and Norway, and are built or operated by the navies of Greece, the Republic of Korea, Portugal and Turkey.
