The Nigerian Navy has held a commissioning ceremony for three new warships, the induction of three helicopters, and the inauguration of newly reconstructed Base Flats for personnel.
As disclosed, the event was held in Lagos on May 31, 2025, during the navy’s 69th anniversary celebration. The three newly commissioned warships—NNS Faro, NNS SHERE, and NNS Ikogosi—are high-endurance, fast patrol boats designed for rapid response and sustained operations in Nigeria’s maritime domain.
Additionally, the navy inducted three Agusta Westland AW109 Trekker helicopters, bearing the visual call-signs NN501, NN502, and NN503.
The helicopters are equipped for over-the-horizon patrols, maritime surveillance, and targeting operations, significantly boosting the navy’s aerial capabilities.
The day’s activities concluded with the official commissioning of the reconstructed Base Flats, providing accommodation for junior naval officers. The facility consists of 207 single-bedroom apartments, aimed at improving the welfare and living conditions of personnel.
This event marks a major milestone in the Navy’s journey, reflecting its position as the third-largest naval force in Africa.
Minister of State for Defence (HMOSD), Bello Mohammed Matawalle , described the commissioning ceremony as a strategic move to secure Nigeria’s maritime domain and safeguard its economic interests.
In January this year, Damen Shipyards Cape Town, a subsidiary of Dutch shipbuilding major Damen, delivered a fast crew supplier (FCS) 3307 patrol vessel to Nigerian Homeland Integrated Offshore Services (Homeland IOSL).
