Canadian space technology company MDA Space has been awarded two contracts to equip the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN)’s Halifax-class frigates with up to six new uncrewed aircraft systems (UASs).
As informed, the award includes an acquisition contract worth approximately $39 million for the initial purchase of two UASs with options to buy four more systems in the future.
Furthermore, it includes an in-service support contract valued at about $27 million over an initial five-year period to sustain operations. This support contract includes provisions for extending sustainment services for up to 20 years.
The advanced technology of the RCN-ISTAR UAS will support Canada’s naval missions and is expected to provide the RCN with ‘critical expertise’ in uncrewed systems and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance operations.
Initial operational ISTAR UAS capability is anticipated in 2028, with full operational capability expected in 2032.

Introduced into service in the 1990s, the Canadian-built Halifax-class ships were modernized to remain operationally effective and relevant until the Canadian Surface Combatants enter into service.
They monitor and control Canadian waters, defend Canada’s sovereignty, facilitate large-scale search and rescue activities, and provide emergency assistance when needed. The ships operate with and integrate into the United Nations, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and coalitions of allied states in support of international peace and security operations.
