Hanwha Ocean, POSCO to develop ultra-high-strength steel for future naval platforms

South Korean shipbuilding major Hanwha Ocean has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with POSCO to jointly develop ultra-high-strength steel for next-generation naval platforms.

As disclosed, the partnership will focus on six key technical areas, including new steel development, application technologies, welding materials and processes, and hull integration methods. At the core of the initiative is an ultra-high-strength rolled steel plate that offers nearly four times the strength of conventional steel, according to the company.

For surface ships in particular, where hulls are exposed above the waterline, reducing the weight of the superstructure is essential for both performance and safety.

The new steel aims to provide significant weight reduction while enhancing ballistic protection in critical zones. These improvements are expected to deliver stronger structural integrity, better weld joint reliability, higher protective performance, and increased crew survivability.

By combining Hanwha Ocean’s shipbuilding expertise with POSCO’s advanced steel technologies, the companies plan to set a new standard in naval vessel construction.

The joint development also supports Hanwha Ocean’s vision of becoming a leading “Naval Total Solution Provider” by delivering highly advanced and resilient warships, it was concluded.

To remind, in May this year, Hanwha joined forces with Polish shipyards PGZ Stocznia Wojenna (PGZ SW) and Nauta Shipyard to strengthen cooperation in naval shipbuilding and maintenance. The strategic collaboration aims to support Hanwha Ocean’s bid for the Polish Navy’s ORKA submarine project and further efforts to localize production.
