Spain is advancing its naval modernization efforts with the launch of the definition phase for a new intelligence ship, designed to enhance the Spanish Navy’s capabilities in electronic warfare, cyber defence, and intelligence gathering at sea.
As informed, the Council of Ministers has approved the start of the definition phase for the future intelligence ship (BAM AGI). The vessel is set to replace the Alerta A-111, as it nears the end of its operational life.
Spanish shipbuilder Navantia will now begin the work on the definition phase. This phase consists of carrying out engineering studies through which a naval platform will be defined, with the capacity for intelligence gathering and conducting electronic warfare operations in a maritime environment.
This vessel is part of the Industrial and Technological Plan for Security and Defence. The company noted that the ship is expected to provide the navy with advanced capabilities for signal interception, cyber defence, and naval electronic warfare.
Its intelligence suite stems from the Santiago programme, an initiative focused on modernising the systems used to collect and analyse signal and emission data from potential threats across all three branches of the armed forces.
The Execution Order for this phase is valued at approximately €14 million and is expected to span eleven months.
Last month, the Government of Spain authorized the commencement of the contracting process for domestic shipbuilder Navantia to design and construct two new offshore patrol vessels (OPVs).
The units will feature upgraded combat, communication, and cybersecurity systems, improved living conditions, and integration of unmanned vehicles. The ships aim to strengthen maritime surveillance and operational capability while improving life on board for naval personnel. Engineering and construction will be carried out using Navantia’s ELCANO digital environment at the company’s Puerto Real facilities.
