NUSHIP Pilbara is the third Arafura class OPV built but the first of four being constructed in WA, with NUSHIPs Gippsland, Illawarra, and Carpentaria to follow.

The launch, which happened on October 31, 2025, marked an important milestone for the SEA1180 Phase 1 Arafura class OPV project, with Civmec Defence Industries and its industry partners leading construction of the vessels.

Named after the Pilbara region in WA, OPV 3 is the first Royal Australian Navy vessel to carry the name. The OPVs have advanced communications, navigation, and surveillance systems- designed to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing Indo-Pacific region.

This capability will play an important role in achieving the long-term aims of the 2024 National Defence Strategy, according to the officials.

The first two OPVs were successfully delivered to the Royal Australian Navy this year. HMAS Arafura was commissioned in June 2025, and NUSHIP Eyre is currently preparing for operational release.

The keel for the sixth vessel in this class, NUSHIP Carpentaria, was laid in September this year.

“The Arafura class OPV fleet symbolises the partnership between our Navy and Australian industry. These vessels will serve with versatility and endurance, conducting patrols, supporting regional engagement, and safeguarding our maritime borders alongside the Evolved Cape Class Patrol Boats,” Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral Mark Hammond, Royal Australian Navy, said.
