INS Ikshak, built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), is a multi-role vessel designed to enhance India’s hydrographic survey and maritime support capabilities. It is fitted with hydrographic and oceanographic systems for charting and data collection, and includes facilities to operate helicopters, allowing it to conduct a range of missions at sea.

Specifically, it features a high-resolution multi-beam echo sounder, an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV), a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), and four survey motor boats (SMBs). It is fitted with a helicopter deck, extending its operational reach and enabling multi-domain missions.

The ship can function both as a survey vessel and as a platform for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations, including conversion to a hospital ship when required.

Ikshak is also the first ship in the SVL class designed with dedicated accommodation for women officers and sailors, reflecting the navy’s focus on modern operational needs and inclusive crew arrangements. Its induction strengthens India’s capacity for maritime survey work, contributes to safer navigation, and supports the nation’s shipbuilding industry.

To remind, the vessel was delivered by GRSE in August this year.
