The US Coast Guard has established the Maritime Nuclear Policy Division to develop and implement policies governing the safe and secure integration of nuclear technology into the marine transportation system.
Advanced technologies, including modern nuclear reactor designs, accelerate and transform the maritime industry. A comprehensive framework of requirements and standards to govern the safe and secure adoption of nuclear technologies is needed to strengthen American national security and enhance economic prosperity.
To meet these needs. the coast guard created a division that will act within the Office of Design and Engineering Standards (CG-ENG), support US Coast Guard Force Design 2028, and administration priorities to revitalize American maritime industries and advance emerging technologies.
The Maritime Nuclear Policy Division will work with US and international partners to develop maritime nuclear policies. It will also engage with industry leaders, universities, and national laboratories to stay up to date on advances in nuclear reactor technology and its use at sea. By establishing this division, the Coast Guard is reinforcing its leadership role in promoting innovation while ensuring the safe and responsible adoption of advanced nuclear technologies in the maritime sector.

“The creation of the Maritime Nuclear Policy Division ensures the Coast Guard is fully engaged with stakeholders so we can safely integrate maritime nuclear technology, while also maintaining a security posture through coordination with other agencies. Staying aligned with industry and federal agencies is critical to promote and safeguard the maritime sector.”
