In a year defined by rapid technological change and rising geopolitical competition at sea, 2025 has delivered unprecedented “firsts” across the naval domain. From quantum navigation under the waves to fully autonomous surface warships, navies and defense innovators pushed the boundaries to support their defense strategies in an ever-evolving landscape.

World’s first quantum optical clock tested on an underwater autonomous sub

In October 2025, researchers successfully tested a quantum optical atomic clock aboard the Royal Navy’s Excalibur extra‑large uncrewed autonomous underwater vehicle, marking the first time such a device has operated underwater at sea. This trial demonstrated ultra‑precise timekeeping and navigation in GPS‑denied environments.

Royal Navy carried out the world’s first sea trial of a cold atom‑based atomic clock Earlier in 2025, the Royal Navy’s HMS Puncher hosted the world’s first sea trial of a cold atom‑based atomic clock, another quantum‑derived timing breakthrough. Installed aboard this Archer‑class patrol craft, the Aquark Technologies’ system proved it could operate continuously in rough offshore conditions.

World’s first autonomous surface drone system delivered In February 2025, Thales delivered the first operational autonomous surface drone system to the French Navy under the Franco‑British Maritime Mine Counter Measures (MMCM) program. These unmanned surface vehicles (USVs), equipped for mine detection and classification, can be controlled from shore, a mothership, or other vessels.
