General Dynamics’ subsidiary, General Dynamics NASSCO-Norfolk, has secured a $183.2 million firm-fixed-price contract covering the ship’s Fiscal Year 2026 Depot Modernization Period.

The work will include a combination of maintenance, repair, and capability upgrades aimed at sustaining the destroyer’s operational readiness.

The contract contains additional options which, if exercised, would bring the total value to approximately $183.6 million. All work will be carried out in Norfolk, Virginia, with completion scheduled for April 2028.

The contract was issued by Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA(, which oversees shipbuilding, maintenance, and modernization programs across the fleet. Ships of this class, including USS Truxtun, are designed for multi-mission operations ranging from air defense to anti-submarine warfare and strike missions.

The contract follows a recent operational incident involving the destroyer, which collided during a refueling operation at sea with the combat support ship USNS Supply (T-AOE 6).

Two personnel sustained minor injuries and were reported to be in stable condition. Both ships remained seaworthy and were able to continue operations. The incident is currently under investigation.

The ship typically carries around 300 sailors, and its capabilities allow it to operate independently or as part of larger naval groups.

In terms of characteristics, USS Truxtun measures roughly 155 meters (about 508 feet) in length with a displacement in the vicinity of 9,000–9,700 tons full load, and can exceed 30 knots in speed. It is armed with guns, missiles, torpedoes, and close-in weapon systems, and typically operates with a complement of helicopters for expanded mission reach.
