Irving Shipbuilding has launched the future CCGS Donjek, the first vessel under the Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ship (AOPS) program, constructed for the Canadian Coast Guard.
The vessel was launched on April 28 in Halifax. CCGS Donjek is part of Canada’s broader initiative to modernize its Coast Guard fleet.

Through the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS), Irving Shipbuilding is building six Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ships (AOPS) for the Royal Canadian Navy, along with two AOPS variants for the Canadian Coast Guard, as well as 15 River-class destroyers for the Navy.
The Canadian Coast Guard’s AOPS variants will serve as key multi-role platforms. They will enhance fisheries enforcement capabilities along Canada’s east coast, support search and rescue operations, and carry out icebreaking duties. In addition, these vessels will significantly strengthen Canada’s operational presence and sovereignty in the Arctic region.
Construction of CCGS Donjek commenced in August 2023, with delivery to the coast guard planned for fall this year, reflecting an accelerated build schedule. Its sister ship, CCGS Sermilik, began construction in July 2024 and is expected to be delivered next year.
