Defense company Thales has secured a contract from the Greek General Directorate for Defence Investments and Armaments (GDDIA) to begin the modernization of the Hellenic Navy’s Hydra-class frigates.
The program will see Thales upgrade the mission systems aboard the four MEKO 200HN frigates with the latest version of the Tacticos combat management system, NS100 AESA radar, and STIR 1.2 EO Mk2 fire control sensors. The company will also provide follow-on support and services in cooperation with Greek industry partners.
According to Thales, the modernization is aimed at extending the operational effectiveness and readiness of the Hydra-class fleet, which has been in service since the late 1990s. The ships were originally built in Germany and Greece with Thales systems integrated onboard.
The company said the upgraded configuration will provide the frigates with enhanced situational awareness, target tracking, and fire control capabilities.
The NS100 radar is designed to deliver medium- to long-range surveillance and weapon support, while the STIR 1.2 EO Mk2 combines radar and electro-optical tracking systems for precision engagement support.
At the center of the upgrade is the latest release of the Tacticos combat management system, which serves as the command-and-control core of the vessels’ mission systems. Thales noted that Tacticos is currently operated by more than 25 navies worldwide.
The firm added that localization is a key element of the program and confirmed that much of the upgrade and sustainment work will be carried out locally. Following completion of the modernization, the company’s service hub in Greece will continue supporting the Hellenic Navy together with domestic industry partners.
