The Philippine Navy has marked its 128th anniversary with a ceremony at its headquarters on Roxas Boulevard, Manila, during which President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to improving naval welfare and accelerating modernization efforts.
In his remarks, Marcos stressed the Navy’s enduring role in safeguarding Philippine maritime sovereignty and protecting national interests amid evolving regional security challenges, particularly in the West Philippine Sea. He said the changing geopolitical environment in the Indo-Pacific underscores the need for a “credible Philippine Navy” to support regional stability.
The president noted that rising maritime tensions and increasing strategic competition in surrounding waters require stronger maritime defense capabilities. He also directed the Department of National Defense and the Armed Forces of the Philippines to deepen cooperation with allied and partner navies to enhance interoperability and security cooperation.
A key highlight of the ceremony was the commissioning of the offshore patrol vessel (OPV) BRP Rajah Lakandula, which is expected to strengthen maritime security and territorial defense operations. Marcos said the vessel represents a step forward in building a more modern and self-reliant naval force.
BRP Rajah Lakandula, named after Rajah Lakandula, one of the leaders of pre-colonial Manila, carries forward a legacy of courage, leadership, and devotion to country. The 2,400-ton vessel was built by South Korean HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, and is the second of six OPVs under the Philippine Navy modernization program.
“It is my honor to lead the commissioning of the BRP Rajah Lakandula,” the president said.
“Truly, this is a pivotal step towards realizing the Navy’s vision of a modern and self-reliant force.”
The president also emphasized ongoing modernization programs aimed at improving operational readiness, training, and personnel welfare.
In February this year, the Philippine Navy held a christening and commissioning ceremony for the offshore patrol vessel BRP Rajah Sulayman (PS-20) and the fast attack interdiction craft BRP Audrey Bañares (PG-910).
