L3Harris Technologies has secured a contract from General Dynamics Electric Boat (GDEB) to provide battery monitoring systems for the US Navy’s Virginia-class attack submarines and Columbia-class ballistic missile submarines.
The systems will provide real-time assessments of submarine battery health, supporting operational readiness, mission effectiveness and crew safety by enabling commanders to optimize mission profiles based on battery performance data.
“These systems directly impact operational capability and crew safety,” said Nino DiCosmo, president of Maritime, Space & Mission Systems at L3Harris.
“This contract reflects our commitment to delivering reliable solutions that support two of the service’s highest-priority submarine platforms that serve as the backbone of America’s strategic deterrence.”
L3Harris said its battery monitoring technology builds on decades of experience supporting the U.S Navy’s submarine fleet, including Ohio- and Los Angeles-class submarines as well as the Virginia-class fast-attack submarine program.
The company is also contributing to the Columbia-class program, which is developing the navy’s next-generation ballistic missile submarine designed to replace the Ohio-class SSBN fleet as the sea-based leg of the US nuclear deterrent.
General Dynamics Electric Boat is the prime contractor for both the Virginia- and Columbia-class submarine programs, with Virginia-class submarines providing the navy’s undersea strike and intelligence capabilities and Columbia-class submarines serving as the future backbone of the strategic deterrence mission.
Recently, the company, together with shipbuilder HII, was awarded contract modifications worth approximately $76.6 billion for Virginia and Columbia-class submarine construction.
