Indra has begun developing a laser-guided point-defense system for military vessels under the Spanish Navy's SILAEM (Shipborne Launcher System) Special Modernization Program.
Backed by €51 million in funding, the program will deliver two versions of the system: a stand-alone configuration and a variant integrated with the SCOMBA combat management system.
Designed to serve as a ship's last line of defense, the system will be capable of countering a range of threats, including hostile fast attack craft, aerial and surface unmanned systems, anti-ship missiles, and attacks launched from coastal areas.
According to Indra, one of the system's defining features will be its open architecture, enabling interoperability with combat systems and sensors supplied by other manufacturers. This approach is intended to facilitate integration aboard NATO and allied naval platforms while allowing future upgrades with additional sensors and capabilities.
The system will combine an X-band fire-control radar for target acquisition and tracking, a launcher turret, laser-guided missiles, and an advanced command-and-control system that coordinates the engagement process.
Indra said the development addresses the growing requirement for layered naval defenses capable of responding to increasingly complex saturation attacks. By integrating multiple sensors and weapons, the system is intended to enable operators to engage threats at different ranges using the most appropriate sensor and weapon for each scenario.
The system will protect vessels against multiple threats, such as hostile craft, naval and aerial drones, helicopters and anti-ship missiles.
To remind, Indra recently secured a strategic agreement to deliver Spain’s new Marine Infantry amphibious combat vehicles (VACIMs).
The contract includes 34 SUPERAV platforms. As part of the program, Indra Group will deliver troop transport, command-and-control, recovery, and ambulance variants of the VACIM, integrating the SUPERAV 8×8 platform with the mission systems requested by the Spanish Ministry of Defense (MoD).
