Boeing and Northrop Grumman have demonstrated manned-unmanned teaming between a P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft and an MQ-4C Triton unmanned aircraft system.
The jointly funded technology demonstration applied universal standard interfaces to enable faster and more cost-effective integration of capabilities across platforms for US and allied operators. The test showed how the platforms can exchange intelligence, coordinate mission planning and execute tasks using standards-based interfaces.
During the laboratory-based demonstration, a P-8A operator issued machine-readable and machine-actionable mission tasking to a simulated MQ-4C Triton using universal command and control interface (UCI)-formatted messages.
The P-8A directed the Triton to transit to a designated area. After receiving the tasking, the unmanned aircraft autonomously planned and executed the mission, employed onboard sensors, processed collected information and returned mission results to the P-8A.
The demonstration included satellite relay communications to replicate operational conditions, while mission management and autonomy functions communicated through open mission systems (OMS) and UCI standards instead of proprietary point-to-point interfaces.
“This Poseidon-Triton teaming demonstration unlocks real-world capability and interoperability for the U.S. and allies,” said Tory Peterson, vice president of Boeing’s P-8 Program. “We’re investing so that current and future global P-8A operators can expand the scope and effectiveness of their missions with low risk, evolutionary enhancements on the most advanced maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft already in service.”
The use of UCI enables the P-8A and MQ-4C Triton to collaborate with other US and allied platforms using the same interface, allowing mission tasks to be distributed across systems, reducing operator workload and accelerating command decisions.
“MQ-4C Triton and P-8A are the backbone of the U.S. Navy’s maritime patrol and reconnaissance force, delivering complementary capabilities unmatched by any other platforms,” said Jane Bishop, vice president and general manager of Northrop Grumman’s Global Surveillance division.
“This demonstration underscores the flexibility of our systems, our unwavering industry investment and the strength of our industry partnerships.”
The simulated mission focused on enhanced interoperability for anti-surface warfare (ASuW) and intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and targeting (ISR-T) operations, demonstrating how manned and unmanned systems can work together to improve maritime domain awareness.
The P-8A Poseidon provides anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, ISR and search-and-rescue capabilities, while the MQ-4C Triton provides long-endurance maritime surveillance and reconnaissance. Together, the platforms form a key component of the US Navy’s maritime patrol and reconnaissance architecture.
The companies said continued investment in open standards and collaborative technologies will help expand capabilities for US and international operators while reducing the cost and complexity of future upgrades.
