TKMS is in final contract negotiations with India for the construction of six submarines under the country’s Project 75(I) program, as the German naval shipbuilder continues to expand its submarine business and international order pipeline.
In its nine-month results for fiscal year 2025/26, TKMS said it is conducting final contract negotiations with India for the construction of six submarines, with an option for three additional boats.
The program is expected to represent a major expansion of India-Germany naval industrial cooperation. Under the proposed arrangement, the submarines would be developed by TKMS and built in cooperation with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders (MDL) in India.
The Project 75(I) program calls for six conventional submarines equipped with air-independent propulsion (AIP), with a focus on enhancing the Indian Navy’s long-endurance underwater warfare capabilities.
TKMS and MDL began their contract negotiations in 2025 after completing services under their Concept Design Agreement. TKMS subsequently submitted binding offers covering engineering services, advanced submarine components including its AIP system, and flexible combat system solutions.
The Project 75(I) negotiations come as TKMS reports strong growth in its submarine business. In the first nine months of fiscal year 2025/26, the company's Submarines segment generated €1.001 billion in sales, up from €854 million a year earlier. Adjusted EBIT increased 300% to €46 million, compared with €11 million in the same period of the previous fiscal year.
The company said the Indian submarine program is one of several major opportunities in its pipeline. TKMS is also working with Canada following its selection as preferred supplier for up to twelve submarines, while recent orders include two additional Type 212CD submarines for Norway.
TKMS said finalization of the Indian contract would further strengthen its international submarine business and contribute to its longer-term growth outlook.
