Singapore-based shipbuilder Penguin International Limited has secured its first naval defense contract as a prime contractor to design, engineer, and build two landing craft for the Republic of Singapore Navy.
The program will be carried out entirely in Singapore at Penguin’s Tuas shipyard, drawing on the company’s in-house engineering, production and project management capabilities.
Penguin said the contract marks its entry into naval shipbuilding as a prime contractor and builds on its experience in vessel operations, engineering, shipbuilding, project management, systems integration and lifecycle maintenance.
Founded in 1976, the company has delivered nearly 400 vessels to commercial and government operators in more than 20 countries through its shipyards in Singapore and Batam.
The landing craft program follows Penguin’s recent involvement in the RSN’s Multi-Role Combat Vessel (MRCV) program. The company recently delivered the first of six large carbon-fiber composite superstructures for the MRCVs.
Under the new contract, Penguin will be responsible for the turnkey delivery of the two landing craft. The company did not disclose further details about the vessels’ design, dimensions, propulsion systems, weapons or delivery schedule.
The contract expands Singapore’s domestic naval shipbuilding capabilities and marks Penguin’s first program as a prime contractor for a naval platform.
Penguin said the award demonstrates its ability to apply its commercial shipbuilding and engineering experience to more complex defense programs and support Singapore’s maritime security and defense requirements.
