Defense company BAE Systems has unveiled Sea Tridon, its new modular 40mm naval gun system, at Euronaval 2026.
The new family of naval protection systems is based on its Bofors 40mm gun and programmable 3P ammunition, designed to address air, surface and shore-based threats.
The family comprises four systems: Sea Tridon, Sea TridonC, Sea Trinity and the Bofors 40 Mk4 Naval Gun. The solutions differ in their levels of sensor integration, fire-control capabilities and deployment options, while sharing common training, logistics and support arrangements, according to BAE.
Sea Tridon combines the Bofors 40mm gun with an integrated electro-optical fire-control system. The configuration is designed to provide independent engagement capabilities and simplify integration with naval platforms.
On the other hand, Sea TridonC is a containerized version of Sea Tridon intended for installation on military, government and commercial vessels. Its configuration allows the system to be deployed for temporary or mission-specific self-protection requirements.
Sea Trinity combines the Bofors 40mm gun and programmable 3P ammunition with integrated radar fire control. The system is configured as a close-in weapon system (CIWS) for engaging missiles, drones and other high-speed threats.
Bofors 40 Mk4 Naval Gun is a compact naval gun designed for integration with ship combat management systems. It provides engagement capabilities against air and surface targets.
All four systems use Bofors 3P programmable ammunition, which can be configured before firing for different target types. The ammunition features six programmable fuze modes and can be used against air, surface and shore-based targets, BAE said.
BAE Systems Bofors President Lena Gillström noted that the family is intended to give navies and maritime operators the option of selecting different levels of protection according to their operational requirements while retaining a common technological and logistical basis.
