Russia Considers Aircraft Carrier Construction

Decision whether to build an aircraft carrier for Russian Navy will be made in six years, reports Interfax referring to Roman Trotsenko, president of JSC United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC).

“Layout of new Russian aircraft carrier is being currently formed. Decision on its construction will be made in 2017”, said the USC president. Development of carrier’s technical layout is conducted under State Arms Program 2011-2020.

The project development is carried out by one of USC design bureaus, reports RIA Novosti. According to Trotsenko, by the time official decision is made, “one should clearly realize both appearance and cost of the ship”. Trotsenko declared late in June 2011 that construction of an 80,000-ton Russian aircraft carrier would start in 2018 and take five years. The USC president did not voiced other details about prospective ship.
