Polish Navy Commander-in-Chief Visits Finland

Polish Navy Commander-in-Chief vice admiral (three star) Tomasz Mathea went to Finland for a two-day working visit. Mutual cooperation perspectives for both navies was the main subject for discussion.

Polish Navy Commander-in-Chief met with the Commander-in-Chief of the Finnish Naval Forces rear admiral Veli-Jukka Pennala. Finland presented the organizational structure and tasks of their naval forces. Admiral Tomasz Mathea paid a visit to the Finnish ships, which included familiarizing with maritime operations conducted by Finnish minesweepers. Commanders of the navies talked about the prospects of developing cooperation in the Baltic Sea. They also discussed the role of naval forces in the context of international cooperation between Poland and Finland.

The cooperation of Polish and Finnish naval forces is carried out mainly through participation in international joint exercises. Both navies cooperate annually during “BALTOPS” exercise in the Baltic Sea, conducted as part of Partnership for Peace program. Furthermore, the Polish and Finnish ships operated together in the past during: ’Cooperative Baltic Eye 2001’, ‘Loyal Mariner 2005’, ‘Brilliant Mariner 2006’, ‘Noble Mariner 2007’, or “Northern Coasts 2010’.
